1. Creating a New Post
To start a fresh piece of content:
1. Log in to your WordPress Dashboard.
2. On the left-hand sidebar, hover over Posts and click Add New Post.
3. Enter a Title: Type your headline in the “Add title” field.
4. Write Content: Use the Block Editor (Gutenberg) to type your text. You can click the (+) icon to add images, headings, or galleries.
2, Managing Categories
Categories are essential for keeping your site organized and helping users find related content.
Method A: Adding Categories via the Sidebar (Quickest)
While you are inside the post editor:
- Look at the Settings panel on the right side.
- Ensure the Post tab is selected (not the “Block” tab).
- Scroll down to the Categories section.
- Click + Add New Category.
- Type the name and hit Enter. The post will now be assigned to that category.
Method B: Adding Categories via the Dashboard (Bulk)
If you want to create several categories at once:
- Go to Posts > Categories in the main sidebar.
- Fill in the Name (e.g., “Travel”) and the Slug (the URL-friendly version, like “travel-tips”).
- Click Add New Category.
3. Assigning Categories to an Existing Post
If you forgot to categorize a post:
- Go to Posts > All Posts.
- Hover over the post title and click Quick Edit.
- Check the boxes for the categories you want to apply.
- Click Update.
4. Publishing Your Work
Before you hit the big blue button, check these final details in the sidebar:
- Featured Image: Set a thumbnail that represents the post.
- Excerpt: Write a brief summary (optional).
- Visibility: Choose “Public,” “Private,” or “Password Protected.”
Once you’re ready, click Publish in the top right corner.
Pro Tip: Try to keep your post in only one or two categories. If you need more specific descriptors, use Tags instead. Think of Categories like the table of contents in a book, and Tags like the index at the back.
